Teaching “Big Picture” Understanding of Canadian History Using Curricular Competencies
Although most social studies and history teachers agree that one of the purposes of learning social studies and history is to help students develop coherent narratives and “big picture” overviews of the past, many K-12 students leave school with bits and pieces of historical knowledge, facts, figures, anecdotes, and narratives. This hands-on, 1.5 hour workshop will introduce participants to teaching resources and assessment strategies that focus on strengthening students’ “big picture” understanding of Canadian history through the explicit focus on the curricular competencies continuity and change, significance, and evidence.
This session will also introduce a new resource from The Critical Thinking Consortium (TC2) called “Snapshots in Time.” Snapshots in Time consists of three sets of cards focused on 150 significant events in the history of what became known as Canada from pre-history to contemporary times. Set 1, the Core Set (Cards #1-50) focuses on the 50 most significant in Canadian history that are well known to many Canadians and are commonly included in K-12 provincial and territorial social studies and history curricula across Canada.
Snacks and coffee/tea/water will provided.

SD23 Pro-D, February 2016.
School District #23 puts on a Professional Development day that is host to many workshops and speakers. In 2016, COSSTA hosted keynote speaker Carl Wilkens, who is the only American who chose to remain in Rwanda after the 1994 genocide. Wilkens’ telling of his own experiences puts a human “face” on genocide, showing us that the perpetrators, victims, and resistors will not soon be forgotten, and teaching participants how one person really can make a difference. Click the February 2016 button to see more details about Carl and the Pro-D day.
